A group of “wannabe” rappers found themselves in handcuffs after allegedly breaking into a historic synagogue in Indianapolis to shoot a music video, authorities said.

The incident, which took place over the weekend at the Jewish Beth-El Temple on the near north side, resulted in at least five arrests.

The suspects allegedly shattered a glass door to enter the property, which has been vacant for years but is a well-known historical landmark. When police arrived, they reportedly saw several individuals—some armed—running away. Officers found a firearm and video equipment inside the building, according to court records per Fox59.

One of those involved, a videographer, admitted to police he’d been hired to film a rap music video.

The synagogue, built in 1925, is recognized as the oldest Jewish site in Indianapolis and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

“I wish that everyone would treat historic places and historic properties with the same reverence that I do,” Mark Dollase from the Indiana Landmarks Foundation, which owns the property, said per local news.

While the building has been vacant, residents say it has never been a hotspot for trouble—until now. Damage from the break-in was repaired Monday, though further assessment is needed to determine if anything inside was harmed.

Fox59's coverage of the arrests stirred amusement online. Facebook users couldn’t help but laugh at the headlines’ choice of words.

"The news didn’t have to do 'em like that. 'Wannabe rappers' is wild," one person commented.

“Wannabe rappers" is diabolical,” another added.

The arrested individuals are reportedly facing misdemeanor trespassing charges.
