‘Bad News for MAGA’ Trump’s Tariffs Could Skyrocket His Merch to Luxury Prices

MAGA merch is about to get a luxury markup—thanks to Trump himself. In an unexpected blow to his base, Trump’s “declaration of economic independence” will soon drive up prices on widely worn unofficial campaign gear. Under the “Liberation Day” tariffs kicking in on April 9, import costs could surge by as much as 54%.

"Inflation is killing the ability to dress like a clown," one X-user posted.

Supporters buying knockoff MAGA gear online—especially from Amazon sellers based in China—will be hit hardest. Trump’s tariffs slap an additional 34% duty on these goods, on top of a previous 20% hike earlier this year. Over 90% of the best-selling Trump-themed products originate from Chinese vendors, according to the Financial Times.

Official MAGA hats have been made in California since 2019—but at over $40, they’re hardly a bargain. That price has driven many Trump fans to cheaper knockoffs, often imported and ambiguously marketed as “decorated in America.” But the Federal Trade Commission isn’t buying it. The agency has cracked down on misleading “Made in USA” claims, exposing a gray market dressed in red caps.

People are wasting no time reveling in the irony.

“Trump Supporters, Your made in China MAGA Red caps are now going cost 34% more. #LiberationDay #tariffs,” one user posted.

“Bad news for MAGA - Those nauseating red ‘Make America Great Again’ hats are going to cost you around $70 thanks to Trump’s #LiberationDay tariffs on China,” another added.

Next week all clothing imports will face steep tariffs, with goods from Cambodia, Vietnam, and Taiwan jumping 30% to 45%. That means budget-friendly apparel—and those unofficial MAGA caps—could cost a lot more. But Trump doesn’t appear concerned. He’s betting that higher costs will push Americans to buy domestic, regardless of the hit to their wallets.

Still, the online mockery keeps rolling in.

“Today’s silver lining on the trade front is the delicious irony of lots of unofficial MAGA hats and other merchandise going up in price. So MAGA fans will have to fork out more to show their support of Donald,” one post said.
